TIPS when working with children/teenagers

What to consider with the YOUNGER CLIENT about starting online therapy sessions?

By Lydia Sterry | Submitted 2024

Online child therapy offers unique challenges and opportunities. Enhance your effectiveness with these concise tips:

For Young Clients:

Address Distractions:

Discuss distractions early, explore grounding techniques, and establish strategies to regain focus. For younger clients, suggest fidget or comfort objects. Contact parents if needed.

Phone Boundaries:

Encourage turning off notifications during sessions. Discuss respecting therapy time, avoiding social media, and minimizing online activity to prevent disruptions.

The Camera:

Guide clients on making eye contact without staring into the camera. Minimize the screen to 2/3rds, centre it, and maintain focus. Address self-posing behaviour if it interferes with concentration.

The Family Privacy Agreement:

Create a "Privacy Agreement" for family members, setting boundaries during sessions. Involve the client in discussions, including potential signs for privacy.

Their Privacy:

Their Privacy: Discuss white-noise apps for added privacy, involving teens in decisions. Consider headphone use and evaluate the client's comfort with their session location.

For parent/guardian:

Technical Considerations:

Encourage stable internet connections and familiarize with the platform. Discuss backup plans for technical issues.

Craft Materials:

Suggest saving household items for creative sessions, promoting engagement through craft activities.

Permissions:

Seek consent for online therapeutic tools. Discuss benefits and risks, ensuring material screening and addressing cyber-security concerns.

Assisting with Session Preparations:

Invite parents to join initial minutes for stability. Ensure their availability to assist during the session if necessary.

Privacy:

Discuss safety measures for confidentiality, considering location comfort. Highlight alternative session spaces if home environments pose challenges.

Legal and Ethical Considerations:

Conduct a dedicated session with parents on legal and ethical considerations. Obtain consent before commencing online therapy.

Ensure reflections on anti-virus software for cyber security. Provide tutorials for software usage, emphasizing privacy and safety.

Overall, remember to regularly assess the effectiveness of the online therapy approach and make adjustments as needed to meet the child's unique needs.
