A PARENTING EXPLORATION while in therapy with their child
Developed by Lydia Sterry B.A (hons) M.A
Are you unsure how to co-operate or work alongside parents of a child you're seeing in therapy?
Are you struggling to keep anxious/overbearing parents at bay?
Are you curious HOW to possibly bring parents more/less onboard with their child’s therapeutic process?
Existentially, we exist in the world with parents. Life doesn’t come with a manual; it comes with a parent.
We’re NOT born without a parent/care giver and we might need to address this when working with children.
There is no step by step process or absolute formula for liaising with parents. However, we can explore various ways to ‘plant the seed’ or ‘activate the parent’s thinking’ (to give them a nudge), to assist the child’s therapy process.
If we cannot successfully navigate alongside the parents, it can quickly impact the child’s chance of continuing therapy negatively or even sabotaging it. The idea is that we want the child’s parental surroundings to support the child’s therapy process.
This ONLINE VIDEO & POWER POINT workshop is designed to address how we might adapt, possibly interact with parents, and be aware of important aspects that affect the parental - therapist dynamic.
This course could be useful for professionals who struggle or who are curious to find the 'delicate balance' of working alongside parents.
The course content reflects on various possible mistakes and learnings that may need consideration before agreeing to work with any child.
Overall, it focuses on how to possibly be in a better position to collaborate with the parents while working independently with their child’s therapy process, issues and predicaments.
Whether you’re a Child Psychotherapist, Child Psychiatrist, School Psychologist, Chaplain, Pastoral Carer, Rabbi, Social Worker, Doctor etc… you may benefit from learning “how” to keep parents “on side” in a useful way to benefit the child’s therapeutic process.
