The Forgotten Part of Therapy: THE CLIENT’S SEXUAL WORLD
Developed by Lydia Sterry B.A (hons) M.A
Can you recall how many times you’ve discussed sexual matters with clients?
“When did you last discuss the client’s sexual world in the therapy session?”
“How much might we be staying with the delicate tensions between listening, observing, experiencing and responding to hearing about the client’s sexual world?”
Without consciously realizing it, some of us may find it challenging to confront our anxiety and engage in therapeutic discussions around the client’s sexual world.
In this case, we may want to ask ourselves, “How much responsibility are we actually taking TOWARDS opening up the sexual world in the same way we might do when working with suicide, dreams or other areas?”
After all, we are all sexual beings whether we discuss it or not. It’s part of being human.
Despite this though, many of us might not ask our clients about their sexual health/wellbeing and may prefer instead, to leave it or wait for the client to bring it up.
In some ways we might indirectly believe that sexual matters need to be ‘client-led’. Of course, this ‘client-led’ approach fits for a large part of the therapy, however, what about the clients who are so frighten of the word sex, masturbation, sexual fantasies, arousal… or grapple with trust, shyness etc…? How might we recognise if these clients want/assume it’s our job to ask about their sexual health or well-being?
This is what this course directly explores and focuses on HOW we might open up the sexual world skilfully, without leading or taking over the conversation during therapy.
The course does not cover all the possible areas/questions of the sexual world, as it is such a rich, complex, relational phenomenon. Instead, it focuses on how to facilitate a journey towards a client’s exploration of their “SEXUAL SELF-DISCOVERY” world.
Overall the course discusses from a phenomenological existential perspective, where we might try to make room to grasp a broader understanding of our client’s sexual existence and intimate life.
The goal of this ONLINE VIDEO & POWER POINT program is not going to qualify you to become a specialized sex therapist, it may however, increase your knowledge, confidence and openness to discuss certain common sexual themes that may be blocking the therapeutic process.
The ideas presented throughout the course encourages and demonstrates various ways you may want to adopt a curious stance towards a client’s sexual world. These discussions include:
Appreciating the sexual world as an additional window into the client’s subjective and relational experiences
Breaking the taboo of discussing SEX and other elements within the client’s sexual world
Showing how to delicately open up the client sexual representations of their inner sexual world and possible struggles
Demystifying the therapeutic conversation around the different variations of sex, masturbation, toys, positions, myths and more
Exploring sexual concepts and recent “street” terminology
Pondering over how to possibly use a creative dialogue to ease the discussion of the client’s sexual world
Addressing any prejudices, assumptions and expectations we may be carrying around the client’s sexual world
Focussing in on potential blockages when attempting to discuss the sexual world - from the view point of client AND the therapist
Plus, many other extras…
By being introduced to these and more you may be better able to simply “check in” or “stay with” discussions related to the client’s sexual world.
Overall this course looks at assisting you to ponder over many hidden aspects of the sexual world in therapy and how it might be adapted to fit in with your own therapeutic approach.
